The Process

Thermofoil is a surface finish applied to kitchen and bath cabinets. It is a plastic (PVC) material which is thermoformed to the profile of an underlying core of medium-density fibreboard (MDF).

Thermofoil cabinet doors can be a solid color or imitation wood grain. The cabinet boxes that accompany these doors can be finished in various materials such as matching thermofoil, coordinating paint, and laminates.Thermofoil is available in a range of textures and sheen levels, the most popular choice being solid white with a matte sheen.

Polyvinyl Chloride is a “thermoplastic” material which has to do with the way the plastic responds to heat. Thermoplastic materials become liquid at their melting point. A major useful attribute about thermoplastics is that they can be heated to their melting point, cooled, and reheated again without significant degradation.

MDF: Medium Density FibreBoard is an engineered wood product formed by breaking down hardwood and softwood residuals. These wood fibers are combined with a wax and or resin binder and the resulting mulch is then pressed at a high temperature and pressure-formed into panels.

MDF is generally denser than similar wood products of the same size and shape. Due to the nature of the manufacturing of MDF, it does not contain knots, rings or other imperfections that natural woods or other man- made wood products might suffer from.

We accept our customer's desired door design and sizes, TDM does not alter by adding or reducing door sizes to allow for PVC thickness. The PVC is between 9um (micrometers) and 20um thick or .0000354 to .000787 of an inch thick.  TDM uses a CNC machine to cut the doors within 1/10000 of an inch.  TDM then sprays each door with a water based, environmentally sensitive glue.  The doors pass into the pressing area where they are placed onto the vario pin press, and under extreme heat and pressure the PVC is applied.  The doors are then trimmed and wrapped awaiting the customer to pick them up and install them in the end-users home.
